Huami unveils square Amazfit GTS, new round watch, teases smart band

Huami, Xiaomi’s key partner in wearable tech, unveiled two new devices and teased a smartband that’s in the works. The Amazfit GTS is a square smartwatch, unlike the recently-announced round Amazfit GTR.

If you prefer a round smartwatch, then check out the Amazfit Smart Sports Watch 3 (this one also has superior GPS skills). Finally, the Amazfit X is a smart band scheduled for an early 2020 release when it will offer a much larger screen than your typical Mi Band.

Amazfit GTS

The watch packs a large 1.65” AMOLED display, which is quite sharp at 341ppi (348 x 442px). The body is fairly compact at 43.25 x 36.25mm and quite thin and light (9.4mm and 24.8g, without the strap). Its body is made out of aluminum alloy and is available in 6 different colors.

The Amazfit GTS is water-resistant up to 5ATM (50m), so it’s suitable for swimming and light snorkeling, in addition to the usual terrestrial exercises.

The 220mAh battery is rated at 14 days endurance, similar to the Amazfit GTR 42mm, though short of the almost month-long endurance of the 47mm model. With continuous GPS usage, the battery will last 25 hours.

Besides GPS and GLONASS, the watch also boasts NFC and Bluetooth 5.0 LE connectivity. There’s an optical heart rate tracker, a barometer, ambient light sensor and accelerometer + compass.

The Amazfit GTS is currently available for pre-booking in China at a price of CNY 900 ($125/€115). Note that all Amazfit watches run a custom OS.

Amazfit Smart Sports Watch 3

This one packs a 1.34” circular display protected by tempered glass. It's a low-power transflective display with 320x 320px resolution. The watch body is made from 316L stainless steel, measuring 48.6mm in diameter. It comes with a sporty silicone strap (which you can easily swap for any other 22mm strap).

Amazfit Smart Sports Watch 3: advanced GPS tracking • optional sapphire crystal

There is a pricier Elite version using titanium bezels and sapphire crystal instead. This one comes with a fluoro-rubber strap and is a tad heavier (59.6g vs. 68.7g). Both versions feature 5ATM (50m) water resistance.

Battery life is 7 days (despite the jump to 300mAh capacity). It can be stretched out to 14 days with Ultra mode, which offers limited smart functionality (notably, 24-hour heart rate tracking and notifications remain active). This is unlike the Basic Watch mode of the GTS, which disables Bluetooth and the heart rate sensor (but ups battery life to 46 days).

Amazfit Smart Sports Watch 3

The Amazfit Smart Sports Watch is made to be on the go - it can last an impressive 70 hours with continuous GPS tracking (much better than the GTS). The BeiDou and Galileo systems are supported too, in addition to GPS and GLONASS.

There’s 1.9GB of user-available storage, which can be used for offline music played over Bluetooth headphones, another perk over the square model.

The Amazfit Smart Sports Watch 3 is available for pre-order in China for CNY 1,300 ($180/€165) for the standard version and CNY 1,700 ($237/€215) for the Elite model.

Amazfit X

The Amazfit X is still in the prototype stages. It promises a large 2.07” curved AMOLED display (326ppi, 430nits of brightness). That’s much larger than the likes of Xiaomi Mi Band 4 or Samsung Galaxy Fit (0.95” in both cases). The 220mAh battery will last 7 days between charges. Pricing will be announced later.
