WhatsApp will get reverse image search
WhatsApp is working on a new feature which is now available in its Android beta channel: reverse image search. Basically, what this does is let you quickly search online for an image you've been sent, thus verifying its authenticity if you need to.
It's a very straightforward feature. Once you tap on an image you've received, in the three-dots menu at the top right will be a new entry: Search on web. This will upload the image to Google and the search engine will then present you with identical and similar images, so you can get a better idea of how trustworthy what you've been sent is.
Of course you have always been able to manually do this, but it's much easier to have this function baked right into WhatsApp itself instead of sharing it to the Google app to achieve the same purpose.
Either way, by searching for an image you'll get more context and will be able to see if it was part of a misinformation attempt.
The feature is currently available only to beta testers, and it could be a few weeks, if not months, before it makes it to everyone, but it definitely seems to be on the way.
