Weekly poll: the Tecno Phantom V Fold2 and V Flip2 are launching next week, do you want one?
A year ago, Tecno unveiled its first foldables. Now the company has followed up with the second generation models, which bring some vital improvements, but also leave quite a few things as they were.
Starting with the Tecno Phantom V Fold2, this horizontal foldable is now noticeably thinner and lighter – 12mm and 249g, down from 14.5mm and 299g for the previous generation. That’s right, over 2mm thinner and 50g lighter, and Tecno still managed to increase the battery size to 5,750mAh (750mAh more than the original).
The new body also has an IP54 rating for basic dust and water resistance. The rest is more or less the same, including the Dimensity 9000+ chipset and the two screens: the 7.85” 120Hz LTPO inner panel and the 6.42” cover display. Tecno did add stylus support, though.
Moving on to the Tecno Phantom V Flip2, this is actually a bit thicker and heavier at 16mm and 196g vs. 15mm and 194g for the original. However, it now comes with a massive (for a flip foldable) 4,720mAh battery, 720mAh more than the original. Both the V Fold2 and V Flip2 have faster wired charging at 70W (up from 45W).
The big upgrade here is the 3.64” cover display, which wraps around the cameras and covers just about the entire top half. This is so much more practical than the circular display of the first gen V Flip. Tecno claims that over 2,000 apps can run directly on the new cover display.
One odd thing is that the new model drops to a Dimensity 8020, down from the 8050 on the original. It’s basically the same chip, except that it’s missing a higher-clocked prime core. Both V Flip2 and V Fold2 have upgraded 50MP ultra wide cameras (up from 13MP). The Flip also has a new 50MP main camera with a slightly larger sensor (1/1.57” vs. 64MP 1/1.73”). This model missed out on getting an IP rating, though. Both new V phones have AI features powered by Google’s Gemini, all the usual things that we’ve come to expect.
