The new vivo Pad5 Pro is the first Dimensity 9400 tablet, the vivo Pad SE is for students

Yesterday, vivo launched the X200 Ultra and X200s, today belongs to the tablets. The vivo Pad5 Pro is the first slate to be powered by the Dimensity 9400 and it is joined by a more affordable vivo Pad SE (here the “S” stands for “Study”). Also new today is the vivo Watch 5.
vivo Pad5 Pro
The vivo Pad5 Pro is a 13” tablet with a bright (1,200 nits) LCD. The display has 3,096 x 2,064px resolution and is good for streaming (10-bit colors, HDR10), gaming (144Hz refresh rate) and document editing (3:2 aspect ratio). The 8-speaker sound system is also a boon for entertainment use cases.

This is the first tablet to feature the Dimensity 9400 chipset. While it was succeeded by the 9400+, this is still one of the most powerful chips on the market. vivo advertises a 2.9 million points score on AnTuTu and a “three-dimensional” cooling system. Depending on the game, the tablet can render at 3.1K resolution or 2.4K at 120fps (with super-resolution).
The tablet can be configured with 8/12/16GB of RAM and 128/256/512GB of storage. Note that the 128GB variant is UFS 3.1, while the other two use faster UFS 4.1.

The vivo Pad5 Pro is slender and light, measuring 6.07mm and 635g. There is also a “feather-light” version of the tablet that is a hair thinner at 5.96mm and significantly lighter at 578g.
In both cases there is a sizable 12,050mAh battery inside, which can last up to 16h of streaming online videos. Charging is done at 66W.
The tablet runs a variant of vivo’s software dubbed Origin OS 5 HD, which promises PC-level office features. The tablet supports a stylus and there is an optional Smart Touch Keyboard 5 Pro case.

For connectivity, the tablet has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.4 and USB-C with USB 3.2 Gen 1 data rates. On the back is a 13MP camera with 4K video recording, on the front an 8MP camera. The available color options are Cold Star Gray, Spring Tide Blue, Cloud Pink and the Feather Light White (that’s the thinner and lighter model).

The vivo Pad5 Pro goes on sale in China on April 25. The base 8/128GB tablet is CNY 3,000 (this converts to $410/€360/Rs.35,000). The pricing for the other storage options is below. Note that the Feather Light edition is available only in 12/256GB and 16/512GB variants.

vivo Pad SE
The vivo Pad SE is a more affordable entry into the world of Origin OS 5 HD. Judging by the marketing materials, vivo sees this as a tablet for students and preloaded it with a number of studying tools and features (including parental controls on how the tablet is used).

The SE is a bit smaller with a 12.3” LCD with 2,464 x 1,600px resolution (slightly wider than 3:2), 100% sRGB coverage and 90Hz refresh rate. The display has a maximum brightness of 600 nits.
This slate also comes in two versions: the 6.8mm/559g standard model and the 6.87mm/569g Soft Light version. The latter has a paper-like layer over the screen that cuts down on reflections and improves readability. Like we said, this is a tablet for studying.

This tablet is powered by a Qualcomm chipset but vivo doesn’t name it outright – given the clues, we think it is a Snapdragon 4 Gen 2. The chip is paired with 6/8GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 128/256GB UFS 3.1 storage.
This slate has a smaller battery with 8,500mAh capacity and fairly slow 15W charging. The battery should last up to 8 hours of streaming online video and has 4 speakers.
The Pad SE has two 5MP cameras, one on the front and one on the back. There is a curious mirror accessory that clips over the front camera and turns it into a scanner – you can use it to scan textbooks, homework and other texts. The Origin OS software will run OCR on the text and the built-in dictionary can show the definition of any word you tap. You can also annotate the scanned documents or use them as easy-to-erase practice tests.

The vivo Pad SE is also launching in China on April 25. The base 6/128GB model is CNY 1,000 ($137/€120/Rs.11,700), but there are a few other options available, including Soft Light models, which cost CNY 200 more.
