vivo's custom Imaging Chip V1 debuts after 24 months of development

We have been hearing reports about vivo launching its own ISP chip, and today we finally have an official confirmation from the company - the vivo Imaging Chip V1 is official, aiming to boost the photography credentials of the company's smartphones.

The official press release did not reveal any technical information about the ISP but did state it is a milestone in the company’s inaugural breakthrough in independent R&D and chip design.

The marketing message from vivo’s Communications office revealed the V1 has been in development for 24 months by an R&D team of over 300 people. The approach after this accomplishment will be in four strategic directions: image system, operating system, industrial design, and performance.

According to Hu Baishan, Executive VP and COO at vivo, the V1 chip can better serve user needs by “optimizing smartphone application scenarios such as viewfinder look and video recording”.

While vivo’s official press message did not say when we’ll see the V1 in a smartphone, Hu Baishan already confirmed to Chinese websites it will come with the vivo X70 series, scheduled to launch on September 9.

We are expecting the new ISP to debut with the vivo X70 Pro+ smartphone, which is going to be the top member of the new premium lineup.
