Upcoming MediaTek Dimensity 900 chipset performs better than the Snapdragon 768G

MediaTek's Dimensity line of 5G capable chipsets is about to expand even more. The company has already announced its top of the line Dimensity 1200 and Dimensity 1100 for 2021, so the upcoming chip will be lower down, decidedly in the mid-range space.

It's tentatively called Dimensity 900, and is meant to succeed the Dimensity 820. According to a new rumor out of China, the Dimensity 900 (model number MT6877) has outperformed Qualcomm's Snapdragon 768G chipset in the AnTuTu benchmark, scoring about 480,000, compared to 440,000. The Dimensity 820 also scores about 440,000, so we're looking at around at 10% improvement overall in performance compared to the 900's predecessor.

Not great, but definitely not bad either. From the Qualcomm mid-range 5G-enabled chip stable, only the new Snapdragon 780G handily beats the upcoming MediaTek chip, scoring around 540,000 in the same benchmark.

We've gotten used to Dimensity three-number chipsets powering extremely affordable devices, at least compared to their Snapdragon-endowed counterparts, and we don't see any reason for this to change with the launch of the Dimensity 900. Hopefully the new SoC gets official soon.
