Just over a year ago, Nothing acquired the Essential smartphone brand, including its intellectual properties and brand assets. Ever since then, there’s been reason to believe that Nothing was working to release a new smartphone. Rumors of this began swirling in October, and the latest report from TechCrunch suggests that Nothing could be announcing a phone as soon as April.

According to the outlet’s source, Carl Pei has been meeting with key industry executives at MWC to show a prototype of the upcoming Nothing phone. The source is apparently close to Nothing. Tech Crunch confirms it has seen a photo of a meeting with Pei and a Qualcomm executive.

There aren’t any specifics on the hardware itself, except that the device will share design and “elements of transparency” as seen on Nothing’s first pair of earbuds.

We are excited to see a new brand entering the smartphone market and we’re looking forward to seeing whether Nothing’s first-generation smartphone will be significant enough to be an industry disruptor, though chances of this happening are slim.
