Nothing teases something

2024-06-03

What do you have there, Nothing? Something else entirely? The company posted this teaser image on X that could be a phone, a tablet, the case of new TWS buds, anything, really. The subsequent post that is just a phone emoji and a metal screw emoji isn’t clearing things up either.

But if we look at the timing, the Nothing Phone (1) and the Phone (2) launched in mid-July last year, so it’s a bit early for the Nothing Phone (3). But it’s not unheard of for companies to pull a launch forward by a month.

As for a tablet, Nothing has not expressed an interest in tablets. Carl Pei’s previous company did launch a tablet last year, the OnePlus Pad, but that was several years after he left to found Nothing. Of course, Pei & co. might surprise us and expand Nothing’s portfolio into new territory.

What else? If it is a phone, exposed screws are a design element reserved for rugged phones. But we can’t be sure that it is exposed – Nothing’s penchant for transparent glass backs does leave screws visible on its designs.

Whatever it is, we will hear more about it soon – Nothing is quite open when it comes to launching new products.

Digging around the less official portions of X, one tipster, Gadget Bits, suggests that this isn’t a new Nothing phone – but the first CMF phone instead. The phone will allegedly be powered by a Dimensity 7200 chip, 6GB RAM (LPDDR4X) and 128/256GB storage (UFS 2.2, expandable) and a 5,000mAh battery with 33W charging. The phone will also boast a 6.7” 120Hz OLED display on the front and a 50+50MP dual camera setup on the back.

With no glass in sight, this means no Glyph lights either (but CMF has a different design language anyway). Gadget Bits backs that claim with the images above, saying that the back will be polycarbonate/vegan leather.

The most interesting detail is this – the Nothing Lock add-on system, which is located on the bottom corner (presumably the one pictured in the image). No add-on system has been successful so far and it has been tried several times by several brands. If this claim is true, Nothing/CMF better bring something really unique.
