iOS 17.0.3 is out to fix overheating for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max

Apple has today released iOS 17.0.3, which, as the name implies, is a very small incremental update to iOS 17. Or rather, it is that if you own anything other than an iPhone 15 Pro or an iPhone 15 Pro Max. If you have either of those devices, then this is the holy grail that you"ve been waiting for. The cool (excuse the obvious pun) update you should install right away.

That"s right, this is the one that"s supposed to fix the overheating issues that a lot of people have been reporting on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max ever since those handsets launched. Last week, Apple finally acknowledged the problems after countless online reports, and promised that a future software update would fix whatever was causing the overheating.

This is that update. In the meantime, Apple has also been working with the developers of specific apps, like Instagram and Uber, which were "overloading" the A17 Pro chipset that the two phones in question use, thus leading to problems with heat dissipation. Presumably this means some of the worst offending apps should also receive updates in the near future to correct their behavior.

The update going out today, which is build 21A360, also addresses a kernel vulnerability that could allow an attacker to gain elevated privileges. This is a flaw that Apple says was exploited on iOS 16.6 and earlier versions. So even if you don"t have an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max, it"s probably safe to update as soon as possible. Note that iPadOS 17.0.3 is also going out, but that"s got the security fix only.
