IDC: Huawei dominates the foldable market in China

The foldable market kept growing in China in Q2, reveals IDC in its latest report. The country saw a 104% year-on-year increase, with Huawei dominating the market with 41.7% of all sales, almost twice as much as the second company, which was vivo.

The research company attributed Huawei's top position to the Mate X5 and Pocket 2 which come with China-made chipsets and satellite connectivity. Then we have vivo with the ultra-thin X Fold3 and the X Fold3 Pro with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 that started selling right before the Q2 period began.

The April-June 2024 period saw 2.57 million foldable device sales in all form factors. This is more than Q2 2023 and Q1 2024, but still short of the most successful quarter for the market - the holiday period at the end of 2023. Given the spiking interest in foldable phones, we expect Q3 to jump both sequentially and yearly, though.

Huawei might be able to snatch an even bigger share of the market with the upcoming launch of nova Flip. The new clamshell will have a slightly bigger cover screen than the other clamshells by Huawei and likely a lower price tag.
