Apple struggles with AI development in China
Apple Intelligence is not coming soon to iPhones in China, reports The Information. According to the report, Apple struggles to adapt Baidu's LLM (large language model) to understand prompts and provide accurate answers and actions in common scenarios.
Apple launched iPhone 16 devices with the promise that they will get AI features in October with the iOS 18.1 update, only to backtrack later that its Apple Intelligence platform will be delayed in Europe and China.
The US company also another issue in China. Apple's privacy policy does not allow data collection from iPhone users who make AI-related queries. However, Baidu wants to save the data for "analyzing and improving its AI."
The model is Ernie 4.0, Baidu's most advanced model, and Apple wants to use it for generative AI on iPhones, Macs, and iPad devices. The plan is also to incorporate the LLM into Siri.
