We’ve seen reports from earlier this year suggesting Apple is due to enter the smart home camera market and now Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman is shedding more light on Cupertino’s next big bet. Apple is reportedly ready to launch its first smart doorbell with Face ID support in late 2025.

As per the new report, the smart doorbell will automatically unlock doors using Face ID scans. Apple has developed its own wireless networking chip called Proxima, which will ensure all Face ID-related images are processed locally on the device. The new device would also back up its data to iCloud, which could be a great way for Apple to boost subscription revenues.

It remains to be seen if Apple will also offer a smart-lock system with its camera or if it will partner with products from third-party smart home lock makers that are compatible with HomeKit. Apple is expected to opt in for the Thread smart home standard. Gurman mentions that the Apple smart doorbell camera is still in its early development stages.

Apple’s smart doorbell camera will be joined by a smart home hub similar to Google’s Nest Hub and Amazon’s Echo Hub devices. Apple is rumored to fit a 6-inch touchscreen on its smart hub device which will also boot a custom new operating system with Apple Intelligence integration, smart home controls and FaceTime support. Apple is also rumored to bring updated Apple TV and HomePod Mini devices next year.
