Samsung tipped to bring back Exynos for the Galaxy S24 series too

A couple of weeks ago we saw a report that the upcoming Galaxy S23 FE will use the Exynos 2200, there was even a Geekbench result that seems to confirm it. Some regions (like the US) will get the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 instead, however.

There may be more to it than that. Samsung switched exclusively to Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy chips for the S23 generation this year and there were claims that the deal with Qualcomm will extend to the S24 series.

While that may still be true, Samsung is now considering bringing back Exynos for the Galaxy S24 series in some regions, reports Pocket Lint based on info from insiders.

Even if the S23 FE uses the old Exynos 2200 for the S22 series, the 2024 flagship should switch to the Exynos 2400. The GPU on this chip reportedly has four times the number of compute units of the Xclipse 920 of the 2200, so graphics performance should see a massive boost.

Also, some (very) early CPU benchmarks put its single-core performance close to the SD 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy and its multi-core performance 20% ahead. Of course, the Exynos 2400 will have to compete against the 8 Gen 3 chip, so it’s too early to forecast how these two will do against each other.

Ben Wood, Chief Analyst and CMO of CCS Insight told Pocket-lint: “I"d be surprised if Samsung decided to return to Exynos for the important European market, but we might see it in some smaller markets to ensure Samsung"s in-house platform stays in the game. There"s also likely an element of Samsung wanting to keep Qualcomm on its toes too, which may be what is driving these recent rumours.”

The final decision is likely some months away and Samsung may be waiting to see how the Galaxy S23 FE is received before changing course for its highly important Galaxy S24 series.
