Samsung Galaxy Watch4 and Watch4 Classic teasers show Google Maps, Play Store

2021-09-26

Samsung is ready to make a major switch in the wrist-worn software it uses – Tizen will give way to Google Wear OS for the upcoming Galaxy Watch4 and Watch4 Classic, though (as Samsung confirmed) the Google software will be skinned with Samsung’s One UI.

Even so, it will look fairly different from the interface we saw on the Galaxy Watch3, for example. Check out these leaked promo videos below.

Towards the end of both clips you see Google Maps, something not available on Tizen. And there’s the Play Store too. But also notice how the apps are arranged in the launcher – they are in a hexagonal grid, instead of being laid out in a circle as is the case with Tizen OS. One UI Watch on Wear OS will work differently than the Tizen UI and OS.

Other things to note in the clips are the GPS-based position tracking, the body composition feature as well as the typical features such as a step counter and a sleep tracker. It’s not that Google apps have replaced their Samsung counterparts, however, you still see Samsung Health and Bixby icons.

The Galaxy Watch4 Classic has a very similar UI, though its selection of watch faces feels more serious, imitating mechanical watches. The watch faces of the vanilla Watch4 lean more into fun territory.

The two Watch4 models, as well as Samsung’s new foldable Galaxy phones, will be unveiled on August 11. The watches will be powered by the new upgraded Exynos W920 chipset and you can have a peek at the Canadian prices that were leaked by Amazon.
