TrendForce: Apple to ship 4.5 to 5 million OLED iPad Pros in 2024

TrendForce's latest report projects that Apple will ship between 4.5 and 5 million OLED iPad Pros this year. That's the 11-inch and 13-inch combined, and it's a lower sales volume expectation than their LCD and mini-LED-equipped predecessors.

TrendForce notes that despite the reduced shipment projection, the move to AMOLED on medium-sized devices is a major milestone for the industry.

The report expects AMOLED tablets to hit 9 million units in 2024, about 7% of the tablet market.

Sales projections aside, the sheer technological innovation behind the displays of the new iPad Pros is impressive. Apple went with “tandem OLED displays”, meaning that they are two OLED panels layered on top of each other to boost the brightness. They promise up to 1,000 nits full-screen brightness for SDR content and up to 1,600 nits for HDR.

TrendForce notes that the tandem technology is a vital interim solution to enhance both performance and longevity until OLED efficiency breakthroughs are achieved in the near future.

The report continues that while OLED panels are complex and hard to manufacture, especially at this size, capacities, and improved yields are expected after 2026.
