Sony Xperia 1 VI leaked renders show the new aspect ratio
Sony"s upcoming Xperia 1 VI has so far been rumored to sport a very similar design to its predecessor, just with a different screen aspect ratio - less tall, a little bit wider this time around. We"ve also heard the 4K resolution might be gone, and that the cameras could be exactly the same as those on the Xperia 1 V from last year.
Today we get to actually look at the Xperia 1 VI, courtesy of some leaked CAD-based renders of the device. The source of these renders claims the phone will have a 6.5-inch screen, and as you can see the headphone jack is still in, as is the dedicated camera shutter button on the right side.
The Xperia 1 VI is said to measure 161.9 x 74.5 x 8.4 mm, which makes it - say it with us - less tall and wider than its predecessor, which measures 165 x 71 x 8.3 mm. So clearly, the sixth generation is ready to say goodbye to the 21:9 screen aspect ratio that made previous Xperia 1 devices stand out, and instead it opts for something more in line with what every other flagship device is doing.
Most phones these days are in the 19:9 to 20:9 space, and that"s most likely where the Xperia 1 VI will also end up. As for the 4K resolution, the industry hasn"t widely adopted that, so if the rumors pan out, Sony will be giving up on yet another feature that probably seemed like a good idea when it was conceived, but in reality doesn"t matter that much - the sales numbers for the Xperia 1 series" non-4K competitors speak volumes on this matter.
It"s unclear exactly when Sony intends to make the Xperia 1 VI official, but for reference do note that the Xperia 1 V was announced in May of last year. Perhaps we"ll see an unveiling around the same time.
