Samsung's next foldable smartphone to be 3.5mm slimmer
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 unveiled last week is 5.6mm thick when unfolded and 12.1mm thick in the folded state, making it look pale in comparison to some Chinese rivals. However, Samsung"s next foldable could be significantly slimmer since KED Global reports that TM Roh, the President and Head of Samsung"s MX team, wants the next Galaxy foldable smartphones to be slimmer and asked the team to develop an "extra slim foldable smartphone."
Citing industry sources, the publication claims that Roh asked Samsung"s engineers to develop a foldable that is as thin as the Galaxy S24 in its folded state. The S24 is 7.6mm thin, while the S24+ and S24 Ultra are 7.7mm and 8.6mm thick, respectively.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6Even if Samsung manages to match the S24 Ultra"s thickness, its next foldable would be 3.5mm slimmer than the Fold6 when folded, which is 1.3mm thinner than last year"s Fold5. The source also claims that the MX team is working on bringing the next foldable"s weight under 239g - that"s how heavy the Fold6 is.
Samsung is also said to unveil a 10mm thick Galaxy Z Fold6 Slim by the end of 2024, with the subsequent models being thinner. It will pack an 8" folding screen, which would be larger than the Fold6"s folding display measuring 7.6".
In addition to developing a slimmer folding smartphone, Samsung is reportedly working on creating foldable-specific content and collaborating with Google and other Android system-based app developers for foldable-specific apps.
