Samsung reportedly canceled its plans for a cheaper Fold

Samsung announced its Z Fold Special Edition yesterday as a souped-up version of the Z Fold6 with larger displays, a sleeker profile and a 200MP main cam. It’s set to launch with a KRW 2,789,600 ($2,000/€1,860) price tag which is a bit more than what the regular Z Fold6 goes for.

We’ve been seeing rumors for a more affordable book-style foldable from Samsung for months but it seems that Samsung has no plans to launch such a device. A new report from Sammobile coming from an unnamed Samsung official suggests that the brand has no intention of launching a lower-priced Galaxy Z Fold device.

Rather than considering it (Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition) a premium product, it’s a product released to expand your options. You can choose according to your taste. As of now, we have no plans to release a separate product with a lower price. - Samsung Electronics official

That’s not to say that Samsung did not consider launching a cheaper Z Fold. A report from earlier this year claimed Samsung postponed its plans to launch the alleged Z Fold6 FE this year.

Samsung reportedly had an early Z Fold6 FE production run which yielded unsatisfactory results – the test devices weren’t substantially thinner or lighter than competing foldables from Chinese brands and lacked a stylus digitizer for S Pen support. Samsung ultimately caved due to the aforementioned factors combined with market uncertainties. As for now, a cheaper Galaxy Z Fold seems to be off the table.
