Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 in for review

2022-08-14

We spent some time time with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 during the Galaxy Unpacked proceedings and you can read our hands-on review for an early look at the new foldable flagship. However, there were things that we couldn’t and didn’t test then.

Our usual detailed tests are now about to start as a test unit is already at the office. It is in the standard Phantom Black colorway rather than the Graygreen we handled initially (which Samsung designated the hero color for this generation).

The retail package includes the phone itself, a USB-C to C cable and a SIM ejector. No, not even the $1,800/€1,800/£1,650 phone gets a charger in the box. The only reason the box is this big is that the phone arrives opened up, keeping its 7.6" internal display stretched.

The Galaxy Z Fold4 is rated for 25W charging, the same as its predecessor. Thanks to some tweaking, however, the phone now charges faster – according to official numbers, it will get from zero to 50% in half an hour. In our tests the Z Fold3 only went up to 33% in the same period. Note that you will need a 25W USB Power Delivery charger to get the fastest charging possible (or a 15W wireless charger if you don"t feel like plugging in).

Another thing that we are excited to test is the camera. It still falls short of the standard set by the S22 Ultra, but at least it should match the S22/S22+. It uses the same 50MP GN3 sensor as the two S22 models (1/1.57”, 1.0µm pixels) and the same telephoto camera with a 10MP sensor and a 3x lens.

The aspect ratios of the cover and internal displays have been reshaped slightly, which should make them more ergonomic. Stay tuned for a full report, which is coming soon.
