Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 5G detailed in near complete (but unofficial) spec sheet

2021-09-13

We’re five days away from the Galaxy Unpacked event that will bring the next generation foldables and while we wait rumors have painted a complete picture of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 5G, Samsung’s premiere phone for 2021. Especially given the absence of a new Note. As we’ve heard many times in the past, the new Fold will support the S Pen. Additional screen details and more are now reported by WinFuture.

The new Fold will have two Dynamic AMOLED 2X displays, both maxing out at 120 Hz refresh rate (and smoothly adjusting to lower rates). The external display will have a 6.2” diagonal and 832 x 2,260 px resolution (24.4:9) and, as before, will be guarded by Gorilla Glass Victus. There will be a standard 10 MP selfie camera punch holed into the display.

The internal screen also maintains its dimensions – 7.6” in diagonal and 1,768 x 2,208 px resolution. This means that both displays have over 370 ppi pixel density. This panel will conceal Samsung’s first under display camera, which will have 4 MP resolution (with 2.0 µm pixels, so binning may be involved). Despite being behind the screen, this module will enjoy a bright f/1.8 aperture.

Moving on to the other set of cameras, the Galaxy Z Fold3 will maintain the triple 12 MP setup of its predecessor almost unchanged. The main module will have Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) with an f/1.8 lens. The sensor will have smaller pixels, though, 1.4 µm (down from 1.8 µm) while keeping the Dual Pixel autofocus.

Next up is the telephoto module with an f/2.4 lens with 2x magnification and OIS, plus a sensor with 1.0 µm pixels. Finally, the 123º ultra wide-angle lens will have an f/2.2 aperture and will illuminate a sensor with 1.12 µm pixels. One major change from last year is that Samsung will enable 8K video recording. However, that is not possible with a 12 MP sensor (unless it is 12 MP after binning), so this bit of info may be wrong.

The Galaxy Z Fold3 5G will be powered by the Snapdragon 888 (non-plus) with no Exynos version mentioned by the rumored specs. Like last year the chipset will be paired with 12 GB of RAM and 256 or 512 GB of storage (non-expandable).

Samsung has worked to slim down the phone. When opened, it will measure 6.4 mm thick (down from 6.9 mm). When closed, it will be 14.4 mm (down from 16.8 mm). There is no place to put an S Pen other than the specially-designed case:

And it will be a bit lighter at 271g (down from 282g). This is despite the addition of IPX8 water resistance – this and the Z Flip3 will be the fist water resistant foldables. Also, Samsung has apparently tested the Z Fold3 to 200,000 open/close cycles. That is the same as 5 years of opening the phone 100 times a day.

Anyway, the battery capacity will take a small hit and will measure 4,400 mAh (100 mAh down from last year). Samsung will maintain the 25W fast wired charging along with wireless charging.

For connectivity, the phone will have a 5G modem and will feature an eSIM in addition to the regular SIM. As before, Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0 will be supported, along with NFC. UWB is not mentioned in the rumored specs, but we can’t imagine it will be missing. A few additional things to mention are fingerprint reader (side-mounted) and stereo speakers.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 5G will start at €1,900 in Europe and is expected to become available in late August. Fans will be able to pick from three “Phantom” colors: Green, Black and Silver.
