Samsung Galaxy SmartTag 2 gets Bluetooth certification

You might remember that back in 2021, Samsung announced the Galaxy SmartTag and SmartTag+ trackers, alongside the Galaxy S21 family. Here's our review of the SmartTag. Back in March, we heard rumors that the Korean giant is looking to refresh its item tracker later this year. That might just be the case, going by a recently leaked certification listing for a gadget called the Galaxy SmartTag 2.

Galaxy SmartTag 2 Bluetooth certification

The certification listing in question is from the Bluetooth SIG database. Besides revealing the tracker's name, it doesn't really offer too much additional info. Other than that the SmartTag 2 will use Bluetooth 5.3 instead of the Bluetooth 5.1 radio in the original SmartTag. Bluetooth 5.3 is an iterative rather than a major upgrade over 5.1, but it should still offer lower power consumption, less interference in connection and better overall connection quality and security.

Unfortunately, we still don't know anything else about the SmartTag 2. Presumably, Samsung will keep the on-device button and the accompanying ability to program that button to control an IoT device via your phone. We are also interested to see if there will once again be a separate version of the SmartTag 2 that also offers UWB support, akin to the SmartTag+, or whether every SmartTag 2 will have UWB.

We probably won't have to wait too long to find out since, if rumors are true, the new SmartTag 2 should be unveiled at the upcoming Galaxy Unpacked event for the Galaxy Z Fold5 and Z Flip5. It will be held in the last week of July.
