Samsung Galaxy Book4 Edge brings Copilot+ and Galaxy AI features with Snapdragon X Elite

2024-05-22

Microsoft announced a new category of personal computers dubbed "Copilot+ PCs". These are AI-focused machines capable of 40+ TOPS so that they handle a lot of tasks locally, but cloud services are part of it too.

We’re telling you all this because Samsung has introduced one of the first Copilot+ PCs – the Samsung Galaxy Book4 Edge. This ties into the company’s own pursuits with Galaxy AI. Oh, and this is one of the first Snapdragon X Elite powered laptops too!

It comes in two sizes – 14”, which weighs 1.16kg (2.56lbs) and measures 10.9mm thick (0.43”), and 16”, which is 1.55kg (3.42lbs) and measures 12.3mm (0.48”). The battery capacities on both are fairly similar, 55.9Wh and 61.8Wh, respectively and both promise a all day battery life.

The displays are 16:10 AMOLED panels with 2,880 x 1,800px resolution and 500 nits of brightness with anti-reflective coating. These support 10-point multi-touch, have a variable refresh rate up to 120Hz and render rich colors with 120% DCI-P3 coverage.

While both versions are powered by the Snapdragon X Elite, they are not necessarily equal. The 14” and 16” use the X1E-80-100 chip by default, but the 16” can optionally pick the X1E-84-100. Catchy and informative model names as always.

Long story short, the 80 chip runs at up to 3.4GHz with all CPU cores active and boosts up to 4.0GHz with only two active. The Adreno GPU delivers 3.8 TFLOPS of compute power. The 84 chip is the top of the line with 3.8GHz all-core max frequency and 4.2GHz two-core boost. The GPU also goes up to 4.6 TFLOPS, but it is important to point out that all Elite models have 10 CPU cores, 42MB total cache, the same RAM speed and the same NPU performance at 45 TOPS (qualifying them for Copilot+).

The Galaxy Book4 Edge comes with 16GB RAM (probably soldered) and either 512GB or 1TB storage. It runs Windows 11 out of the box and mixes Samsung and Galaxy AI features.

Let’s talk about them for a moment. Recall is a search function for the forgetful – just tell the PC what you about the document, email or web page and it will find it for you. This is one of the Galaxy AI and Copilot+ that work on-device and don’t upload data to the cloud. Even so, you have full control over the data they have stored on your device and you can filter, adjust and delete it.

AI features you may have used on your Galaxy S phone are available too. The PC will do Live Captions and can translate them to English. Chat Assist and Live Translate are available too – these help you tweak your writing style and break language barriers. Additionally, Circle to Search results from your phone can easily be copy-pasted to the PC.

There is a new dedicated AI button that gives you instant access to all the AI features. We didn’t even mention them all – there is generative AI based on your sketches and text, fun camera filters and more.

Alright, let’s go back to the hardware. We mentioned the battery capacities already, charging is handled by a 65W USB-C adapter. Additionally, there are two fast USB 4.0 ports , an HDMI 4.1 (4K @ 60Hz) and a headphone/microphone combo jack. The 16” laptop also has room for a USB 3.2 port.

Wireless connectivity is handled by Wi-Fi 7 (be), but note that in South Korea only 6E is available (this seems to be regulatory issue, not a hardware one).

The laptops body is made out of aluminum, glass and plastics, including recycled materials. Only one colorway is available right now, Sapphire Blue. The battery promises up to 22 hour video playback time.

The Samsung Galaxy Book4 Edge (both 14” and 16”) will be available starting on June 18. The AI-powered laptop is coming to the US, the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and South Korea. Pricing has not been confirmed yet.
