Rumor: Xiaomi is also working on a phone with a 200MP sensor

Motorola isn’t the only company working on a phone with a 200MP camera – Digital Chat Station reports that there is a phone on the way with a 200MP sensor, a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, a 120Hz display and a 5,000mAh battery.

While the leakster was playing coy, some speculate that this is a Xiaomi phone, specifically the Redmi K50S Pro. Or it might be the Xiaomi 12T Pro instead (actually, those may be one and the same, just different names in different regions).

The sensor will be either Samsung’s ISOCELL HP1 or the ISOCELL HP3. Both have 200MP resolution, but the difference is in optical format and pixel size – 1/1.22” and 0.64µm and 1/1.4” and 0.56µm, respectively (before 4-in-1 binning).

Motorola is using the larger HP1 and it posted a camera sample earlier today, showing off what the sensor can do with 4-in-1 pixel binning enabled – that’s still a 50MP photo! It’s not yet clear which sensor Xiaomi will pick. Given the premium 8+ Gen 1 chipset, it makes more sense to go with the HP1, of course.

There are more uncertainties – will Leica work on the phone or not? We will have to wait for more leaks to find out.
