After a teaser announcement yesterday, today on day two of its Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii Qualcomm has finally detailed the upcoming 865 chipset, that will certainly power most high-end Android smartphones next year.

The Snapdragon 865 promises to have 25% faster CPU performance (or 25% better CPU power efficiency) and 20% faster graphics (or 35% greater GPU power efficiency) compared to the Snapdragon 855.

The CPU gains are primarily achieved from using the ARM Cortex-A77 performance cores (A76 in the 855). That said, the configuration of the CPU is pretty much the same, with even clock speeds staying unchanged between generations. So there"s still one Prime core (marketed as Kryo 585) clocked up to 2.84 GHz, 3x Performance cores (Kryo 585) clocked up to 2.4 GHz, and 4x Kryo 385 (based on Cortex-A55) Efficiency cores clocked up to 1.8 GHz.

The new Adreno 650 GPU supports QHD+ 144Hz screens (or UHD 60Hz). The Spectra 480 ISP supports up to 200 MP main cameras (or 64 MP with zero shutter lag), or up to 25 MP dual cams, 4K HDR @60fps video capture with 64MP burst images or 4K @ 120 fps, or 8K @ 30 fps, as well as unlimited capture of 720p footage at 960fps.

The X55 modem is part of the package (although it"s not on the same die as the SoC), supplying both 4G and 5G connectivity, achieving theoretical maximum download speeds of 7.5Gbps on 5G and 2.5Gbps on 4G (and uplinks of 3Gbps and 316Mbps, respectively). It supports both standalone and non-standalone 5G networks, as well as both sub-6 and mmWave developments.

The Snapdragon 865 is Wi-Fi 6 certified, and supports Bluetooth 5.1, aptX TWS, aptX Adaptive, and aptX Voice. The Hexagon 698 and Tensor accelerator bring a 5th gen AI engine which doubles the performance of its predecessor.
