"Orion" phone with Exynos 1080 appears on AnTuTu, beats S865+ phones in the GPU test

2021-09-18

AnTuTu has discovered the first results from an Exynos 1080-powered phone in its database. This 5nm chip was briefly mentioned by a Samsung exec, but is yet to be fully revealed so this discovery fills in some important details.

The CPU features for Cortex-A78 cores and four A55, the big cores are clocked “up to” 3.0 GHz. With a 181,000+ CPU score, this phone surpasses the Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G, which uses a Snapdragon 865+, though some S865+ devices scored higher - the Asus ROG Phone 3, for example, got 185,651 points, so it’s pretty close.

"Orion" phone with Exynos 1080: AnTuTu benchmark results

The GPU is a Mali-G78 as expected, but we still don’t know the core count. An estimate of “plenty” sounds about right as the graphics sub-benchmark shows a score close to 300,000. That trounces even the ROG Phone by quite a margin.

The best Android GPU currently in AnTuTu’s database belongs to the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra (also an S865+ phone) and it got only 258,171 in the GPU test. This means the Exynos is 15% faster. For comparison, the Snapdragon 865 GPU was 20% faster than 855’s GPU.

We haven’t seen what the upcoming Snapdragon 875 can do, but we can expect a similar year over year boost. This means that the Exynos 1080 should perform very close to 2021 flagships, especially in terms of graphics. And this isn’t even Samsung’s top chip for next year (that would be the Exynos 2100).

The 1080 is meant for premium phones and rumor has it that the vivo X60 will be the first to use it. However, this benchmark score is lacking a brand name, it only reveals the code name – “Orion”.

vivo or not, this phone runs Android 11 and it has a 120 Hz display. Its Exynos 1080 is paired with 8 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 512 GB of UFS 3.1 storage. The Orion is a well-equipped phone and the 693,000+ total score edges out the ROG Phone 3, the current AnTuTu champ with 642,671.
