New York State now part of the Mobile ID program
New York State residents can now use the New York Mobile ID app to store their state ID card, driver’s license or learner’s permit. The app is available on the Apple App Store and Google Play and it will be accepted at TSA security checkpoints across 30 airports in the US. Passengers are still required to bring their physical ID at airports and venues as there are no laws that mandate accepting digital IDs for businesses or law enforcement.
The New York State digital ID card allows users to only share the information that is required by the verifier so you can hide certain personal details like your address. The app also supports a QR code generator for fast and contactless scanning at venues and airports.
The setup process requires a valid US phone number which will be binded with your digital ID. You’ll then be asked to take photos of the front and back of your physical document and verify your identity with a selfie. Once your digital ID is approved it will use the same photo from the database of your originally scanned document. It’s also important to note that the digital ID can only be used on one device at a time.
The digital ID card also shows whether you are an organ donor or military veteran. New York joins Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Florida, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, and Utah in a growing list of US states that currently offer digital ID/driver’s license.
