Moto G Power 5G (2024) arrives with better cameras, Moto G adds SD 4 Gen 1 chipset
Motorola just unveiled the 2024 versions of its affordable 5G phones â the Moto G Power 5G and Moto G â which are coming to the US and Canada later this month or early next month.
Moto G Power 5G (2024)
The Motorola Moto G Power 5G (2024) grows its display to 6.7â (thatâs 0.2â more than the 2023 model), but it is still an IPS LCD with FHD+ resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. No OLEDs here. Both phones have stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos and 3.5mm headphone jacks.
The camera is a fairly big improvement â the 50MP man camera now has Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) and there is even an 8MP ultra wide (118°) that also doubles as a macro camera (the 2023 model lacked an UW module). The front-facing camera has a 16MP sensor.
The phone is powered by the Dimensity 7020 chipset, though thatâs barely a coat of paint over the Dimensity 930 that was used in last yearâs G Power. On the plus side, the chip is now paired with 8GB of RAM (with up to 8GB more of virtual RAM) and comes with 128GB of UFS 2.2 storage.
The battery got a solid upgrade too â the 5,000mAh capacity is the same, but the wired charging rate is doubled to 30W and Motorola even included 15W wireless charging (a first for the Moto G family).
The Moto G Power 5G will be available from US carriers starting on March 22 (T-Mobile, Metro, AT&T, US cellular, Verizon, Straight Talk, Total, Walmart Family Mobile and Visible). The new G Power will also be available in Canada from April 12.
If you want an unlocked unit, you will be able to pick one up from Motorola.com, Amazon US and Best Buy US from March 29 at a price of $300. Obviously, carriers will have their own prices and deals for the phone.
Note that both new models have NFC connectivity, which was missing from their 2023 counterparts. Also, they launch with Android 14 out of the box. Thereâs still no proper water resistance, but they do keep Motoâs water-repellent design. Some units will be backed with vegan leather.
Moto G (2024)
The Moto G (2024) is Motorolaâs first phone to use the Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 (the 2023 model used the Snapdragon 480+). This should offer a solid performance boost, even though this budget 5G model is still equipped with only 4GB of RAM (plus 4GB extra virtual RAM). The storage is 128GB â also, both phones have microSD slots.
The display is pretty similar to last year, 6.6â LCD with 120Hz refresh rate but only HD+ resolution. The camera hasnât seen many changes either, the main module houses a 50MP sensor and it is joined by a dedicated macro camera. On the front is an 8MP selfie camera.
The battery is basically unchanged too, with 5,000mAh capacity and 18W wired-only charging (last yearâs model was rated at 15W).
US carriers will be the first to offer the Moto G (2024) â starting on March 21, it will be offered by T-Mobile and Metro. Later on it will be picked up by a wide range of carriers and MVNOs: Cricket, AT&T, Boost Infinite, Boost Mobile, Verizon, Xfinity Mobile, US cellular, Consumer Cellular, Google Fi, Optimum Mobile, Cox Mobile, Straight Talk, Total, Simple Mobile, Tracfone, Walmart Family Mobile and Visible.
Unlocked nits in the US will be available from Motorola.com, Amazon and Best Buy from May 2 at a price of $200. The phone is also coming to Canada on May 2 (from Motorola.ca) and local carriers later on.
