Meta’s Twitter alternative app leaks in screenshots

Meta held an employee preview of its upcoming Twitter competitor and a screenshot of the app managed to leak. The internal name for the new social media app is “Project 92” while the rumors suggest the official name may be “Threads”.

Based on the leaked screenshot we can see the interface looks quite similar to Instagram but without images. As per Chris Cox – Meta’s Chief Product Officer (CPO), the upcoming social media app will utilize the ActivityPub social networking protocol which will allow users to migrate their Instagram accounts and followers to the new platform.

The Meta exec also shared the app will be “our response to Twitter” and will automatically populate profiles with the user’s Instagram account information. Meta has reportedly received multiple requests from public figures and creators for a stable Twitter alternative that’s transparently operated and secure for distributing information.

Meta reportedly has a commitment from several celebrities including DJ Slime to use the new platform and is in discussions with Oprah Winfrey and Dalai Lama as potential additions. Development for the new social media project began in January and will be available as soon as possible.
