Leak shows speculative renders of the Huawei Mate 50 series, talks specs
Huaweiâs launch schedule has become irregular, but the company did confirm that it plans to launch the Mate 50 series eventually. The latest leak on the topic shows renders for the three main phones and a new tablet, plus a collection of rumored specs. Note that these are highly speculative and could prove to be wishful thinking.
The Huawei Mate 50, Mate 50 Pro and Mate 50 RS are listed with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip (instead of the Snapdragon 888), though still limited to only 4G connectivity. The Pro model will likely have a way around that with a 5G case, similar to the one for the P50 Pro, the RS will have a similar solution. The Pro and RS models will pack 12GB of RAM and 28/256/512GB storage, the vanilla Mate 50 will go down to 8GB of RAM and 128/256GB storage.
The phones will reportedly also feature an NPU from HiSilicon for the XMAGE processing, an in-house replacement for the camera tech co-developed with Leica.
Speaking of the camera, it is said to feature a switchable aperture â f/1.4 and f/4 â for the 50MP main cam. On the Mate 50 Pro and Mate 50 RS that should be an IMX800, on the vanilla model it should be the IMX766 instead. All three models are expected to have a telephoto lens, but its specs are unclear, same goes for the ultra wide. As for the selfie camera, it will be a 13MP unit with a 3D sensor for face unlock on the Pro and RS models.
All three phones are expected to use 66W fast charging for the 4,500mAh batteries on the Pro and RS (plus wireless charging), 4,400mAh on the vanilla model.
The Mate 50 trio will have AMOLED displays made by BOE, according to the rumors. The Pro and RS are allegedly getting curved 6.78â 120Hz LTPO displays (1,212 x 2,612px), the vanilla model a flat 90Hz LTPS display (1,225 x 2,800px, the size is not entirely clear).
The Huawei 50 RS model will have a ceramic body as its main selling point, the other two will feature a metal and glass sandwich build.
The rumored specs include a fourth model, the Huawei Mate 50E, which is similar to the vanilla model, except that it will use the Snapdragon 778G chipset (again limited to 4G connectivity).
The leak also shows a Huawei MatePad Pro 12.4â, a larger version of the 11â MatePad Pro from July. There are few specs for this one, but one image shows the unveiling date â September 7, sales on the 9th â and the prices. It starts at CNY 4,000 ($590/â¬580/?47,000) for a 128GB Wi-Fi model (the 11â slate started at CNY 3,300). The only specs listed on the image describe a 12.4â OLED display (120Hz, 1,000 nits), a slender 4.9mm thick build and â200+ PC appsâ (this could be a new HarmonyOS feature).
Itâs not clear what chipset will be used for this one, but it is split into a base model and a Performance Edition. The 11â Pro had two versions â one with a Snapdragon 888 and one with an 870, we will probably see something similar with the 12.4â tablet. The third version listed features wireless connectivity, 4G only if we had to guess.
Will Huawei unveil the Mate 50 series alongside the MatePad Pro 12.4â next month? Itâs possible, but there have been relatively few leaks about the Mates until now, so it is far from guaranteed. Again, all this information could prove unreliable - we will have a better idea about its validity in September when we see if the MatePad details are confirmed.
