Google Assistant will begin showing response bubbles as large bold text instead

2021-06-02

Google Assistant first made its debut with the now defunct Google Allo, a messaging app that Google eventually phased out. The mention of Allo here is important because Google Assistant was positioned as a friendly virtual assistant that a user could casually chat with. Therefore, Google Assistant’s visual responses appear in text bubbles.

This use of text bubbles is changing, depending on the context of the response given, this according to 9to5Google who reports that the chat bubble responses are being replaced with larger, bold print. The larger print doesn’t show when asking informational queries like the weather or with calendar cards. Instead, the new text is shown whenever a more casual or personality driven response is offered such as when asking Assistant to tell you a joke.

The change goes past the chat bubble idea and makes things clearer and easier to read. As reported, the new text can be seen with some Assistant responses on Android and using the latest version of the Google app.
