Google releasing an unlocked G1 for developers at $399

2021-05-06

As of now developers can get a fully SIM-unlocked T-Mobile G1 with unlocked bootloader that allows flashing of custom Android builds (no need of signed system images anymore). Called the Android Dev Phone 1, the special device will be available to all developers registered at the Android Market from 18 international markets including US, UK, Germany, Japan, India, Canada, France, Taiwan, Spain, Australia, Singapore, Switzerland, Netherlands, Austria, Sweden, Finland, Poland, and Hungary (with more to come soon).

Android Dev Phone 1

The Android Dev Phone 1 is the next step by Google of making the Android OS as open source as possible. The device currently costs 399 US dollars with free shipping within US. The only prerequisite to buy one is to have a developer"s registration over at the Android Market, which will set you back a one-time registration fee of 25 US dollars.

For now there is a limit of only 1 phone per developer and as Google point out the "Android Dev Phone 1 devices are not intended for non-developer end users. Since the devices can be configured with system software not provided by or supported by Google or any other company, end users operate these devices at their own risk."

Yeah right! Sounds scary, doesn"t it?
